Can you relate to my story...
When I first decided that I wanted to become a principal, I tried to learn everything I could and gain experience in as many aspects of the job as possible. When what I thought was the perfect position opened up and I was overlooked, I even left to take a job outside of the school system! I was feeling angry, betrayed, and helpless to achieve my goal. I determined (by myself) that I needed more experience to become a stronger instructional leader and better prepare for the next opening! As I worked in my new position, I continued to apply for principalships and even though I always (well, almost always;) got great feedback- I still wasn't hired.
I soon realized that I needed to do even more to set myself apart and make it nearly impossible for a hiring team to turn me down! So I did. I expanded on my plan to become a desirable candidate -and finally, it happened! I started getting calls ASKING ME to apply for open positions! When I was hired as a principal, I had a choice of positions- and it was perfect!
But, it hadn't been easy and I was to the point of considering relocation or a really long commute before I finally landed the role that I wanted.
Later, when I became a principal- I was determined to be great so on my own I found a mentor to help me to consider the things that I wouldn't know to even think about. It was great and I loved the experience- despite all of the toughest parts of the job.
